Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has urged Congress to take action against “fake news” spreading over the Internet.
Clinton said in a speech in Washington on Thursday that the epidemic of malicious fake news can have real-world consequences. She added that lives of ordinary people are at risk and that its danger must be addressed quickly.
Clinton herself had been a target of fake news during her presidential election campaign. A report claimed that a restaurant in Washington was home to a child sex trafficking ring involving Clinton.
A man who believed it fired a gun inside the restaurant.
Fake news is easily spread through social media. Critics note that false information on presidential candidates was transmitted to many people during the latest election campaign.
Some Democrats argue that fake news is one of the contributing factors to Clinton’s electoral loss to Donald Trump.
