NHK has learned that Japan’s government plans to step up cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency in taking measures against nuclear terrorism ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
The government will send State Minister for Foreign Affairs Kentaro Sonoura to Vienna to meet IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano.
His visit coincides with the IAEA international conference on nuclear security that starts next Monday in the Austrian capital.
Sonoura intends to confirm with Amano that the Japanese government and IAEA will strengthen cooperation against nuclear terrorism.
The government hopes to share terrorism-related information with the IAEA and receive technical assistance from the agency to prevent nuclear terror attacks.
The IAEA has been helping host countries of the Olympic Games and World Cup soccer tournaments.
Government officials plan to work out details on cooperation, based on talks between the state minister and the IAEA chief.
