Japan’s top government spokesman says 3 Japanese nationals have been arrested and another detained by the Chinese authorities on suspicion of espionage.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga spoke to reporters on Friday morning.
Suga said the Chinese government has informed Japan that the authorities arrested 2 men in September after detaining them separately in the provinces of Zhejiang and Liaoning in May.
He said China has also told Japan that a Japanese woman was taken into custody in Shanghai in June and officially arrested last month.
Suga added that another Japanese man was taken into custody in Beijing in June and is now being detained as a criminal suspect.
The top spokesman stressed that Japan has never conducted spying in any country. But he declined to comment on the arrests and the detention due to the nature of the incidents.
