A leading Japanese security services company has developed a small unmanned patrol aircraft designed to track suspicious activities.
The drone, unveiled by Secom on Thursday, measures about 60 centimeters square. It can be used to observe suspicious-looking people and vehicles that break into properties.
The drone takes off when ground-based sensors detect an intruder. Images of faces or license plates can be captured by a camera on the device and sent to a control center, triggering the deployment of security personnel.
Images can be taken in the rain or at night. The drone can move to within about five meters of an intruder and even give chase.
Secom’s development chief, Kensuke Shindo, says just a single drone can replace the numerous security cameras that are required to monitor a large property. He says safety and crash-resistance were primary considerations in its development.
